The Shanghai correspondent of The Tim" points out that great attention, espacially from the point of view of British interests in the Yangtze Valley, is crating ou the future status of the China Merchants” Steam Navigation Company. Strong rumours have recently been current that negotiation and pro- veedling for a Japaness loan secured on the mortgago of the company's landed properly at Shanghai, and at all Yangtze -ports, which is quite exclusive of the Evet of 54,000 tons, and is conservatively estimated at Tis. 12.000,DOU. Them rumours have been as "strongly denied by Chan Fai-ting, the manager, but in the peculiar circumstances of the com pany, which in the past two years has endless dissensiona been subject to simong the shareholders, it's quite pos- silde, says the correspondent, that Chun Fai-ting would be the last to hear of my such negotiations. In the latter part of 1911 the company was forend to ruiss loan of Tis. 1,500,000 to satisfy the exactions of the revolutionaries, and the Japanese strove hard for the privilega of supplying the money, which, however, was eventually raised from the Hong- kong and Shanghai Bank in the form al A simple mortgage. This episode not auly alarmed the shareholders us to the possibility of their property being seized at any time by belligerents, but it aroused the Government to the danger of this most important business passing under raign control. This appreben. sion was recently intensified by revein- tions as to the control nequired by the Japanese over the Hanychping Corpora tion.

The correspondent adds that at present the real cause for saxiety in uncertainty as to the actions of Sheng Kung-pro, who, with his own interest and that of his tumily, is a half-interest in the com pany, and is ruspected of a leaning to- wards the Japanews, especially as it was largely through his instrumentality that the Japanese acquired their hold of the Hanychping Corporation. According to the China Merchants" charter no foreigner can own shares, but if an overwhelming Japanese intérent was acquired by mort. guge the Chinese Governinent might pro test in valu.
