London owes the preservation of Lin coln's Inn-fields to King James 1. Pier's-fold, Cup-fald, portion Fichett's fidd--they were waste ground about the edge of the town, a farcurik baunt of some of its worst characters, and put to no better use than for coon sional executions and for the exercising of troops. It came to King James' knowledge that bricks and timber were being deposited about the fields with a view to building, and in the arbitrary Insion of Stuart monarchs be forbade the work. He had ideas of his own as so their disposal. He intended that the ground should be laid out in walks like Moorfields, a popular resort of the citizens for pleasure and amusnant beyond the City's north wall; and Inigo Jonos was called in as adviser.
