OLYMPIC SAILS AHEAD.

200 PAYKENGREN LEPTASIORE,

14

As extraordinary incident occurred at Queenstown on Sept. 27, when the White Star liner Olympic arrived off the port, but failed to call and embark the 200 rst, second, and third class passengers, and 1471 sacks of maila for New York awaiting her, and proceeded to Americs without them.

When the Olympic anchored of the month of the harbour three tenders, with the passengers and ancks of mails, left to trapafer them to the huge stannuship. When they reached the line; however, it was found that it would be dangerous to attempt to transfer the passengers and reails owing to a heavy swell. The tenders sedordingly went inside Roche's Point, where the sen was smooth, but the captain of the Olympic declined to take in the veel on the ground that her exfety would be endangered by entering the bay, and after the tenders had been waiting for about two hours they returned in (quoen-town.

Subsequently Mesnis. Bestband On,, dự local agents of the White Star Line, a Doured that instructions had been received

from Liver, al that if the passengers and mails could not enbarked, before dark Captain Haddock could use his own discre tion whether or not to proceed to New York. Meanwhile the Olympic was off the Dausa Rock Lightship, too far out to em-

bark the inila Captain Haddock decided to start immediately for New York, and the engere and mails were left at QuetBytown.

An indignation meeting of the saloon and second class passengers who intended. embarking on the liner was held at Jacene town. Senator Clark occupied the chair. A tesolution was proposed by Judze Cohalan, of New York, and recorded by Mr. Michael Sullivan, artist, of Oakland“, Calif rain, protesting against the action of the captain of the Olympic in not conting into Queenstown to embark the paasorgers, and a communication was wired from thei meuting to the White, Star Company at Liverpool and London'demanding that the shop be detained at Queenstown, and that pumper Lacilities be affo ded to th passen- kers tɔ amback on thao rossel,

"The setion of Captain Haddock," maid' an official of the White Star Comps y **was justified. The considered there was the slightest danger to the great liner, notwithstanding the breaking of Post Office contracta and inconvenienes passengers on land, his conduct was correct. Only recently Cunarders have not gone into port and this incident bears out the view! of no official of that company that Queenstown is not suitable sa a port of call for these great vessels," The Olympic made lier maiden trip in Soptember, 1911, when she callided, it will be recalled, with

·ha Majesty's ship Haske in Southampton Watne, and was damaged. She is 862ft. long and has a breadth of 92fl, only a

tile leas thin the Titanic..

The Olympic powed the Dount's Rock Lightship at 7 pun, proteoding an her western voyage Arrangements were made by the White Star Company to embark the passengers and malls left behind on the Adriatic the next day. Senator Clark, of Mustann, who had booked a saloan passage on the Olympic, expressed himself very warmly on the failure of the linor to em- bark the Queenstown passengers. He said that he had important engagements to fulf) in the United States which he could not now meet, and moreover his baggage was "put on board the Olympic at Liverpool. He and his fellow-passengera, be mid, could see tu roxon why the captain of the Olymple coill not have brought in his abip about another half mile, when he would bare been in perfectly calm water, and the embarkation could easily hava takau pince.
