The unique germicidal power of Formamint has been frequently detaonstrated by scientific experi menks. One of the most recent of these, conducted nby Dr, Porkowski, the famous Berlin scientist, is"

Dr. Piorkowski coated three glass plates with a substance on which germs thrive. One (Fig. C) le Aho treated with some saliva in which Formamint had been dissolved. A Scottish society is being formed with the primary object of publishing works in the Gaelic Inngunge. The chief founder is the lev. R. A Gaelic works of merit will be published sach year, and there will hu annual lectures by eminent Celtia scholars. The beadquarters of the society are to be in Edinburgh, and amerg thea who are interesting themselves in the scheme are the Dake of Argyl, the Duke of Richmond and Gerdon, and the Marquis of Fute. The society will take the name "Society of Scottish simply means Trettors."

THE GORDON HIGHLANDERS,
Bit by bit the romantic touches which adorned history and did so much to enliven the compilations of industrious Dryandusts are being swept away. Raleigh and his cloak, Tell and the apple, Cromwell and the bauble,.aut to mention Dunstan and the Devil, have all gone. And now 1. J. M. Bulloch asks us to believe that the story about the beautiful Duchess, of Gordon recruiting the Gordon Highlanders with a kiss must also be blotted out of all veracious chronicies. Under she auspices of the Banffshire Field Club, he has published an account of the Innious regimont, as recorded in documents in the possession of the Dukeot Richmond and Gordonat Gordon Castle. He says that recruiting in the din trict, which was already drained of likely men, and in which there were competing corps, wis of a very difficult character. Bounties to the amont of twenty guincas and more had to be paid for recruits, and the recruiting agents, among whom there seem to have been included most of the members of the Ducal family, wero unable to be too particular. Mr. Bulloch is there- fere disposed to disbelieve the story of the Duchess's recruiting fonts" with a kiss and a guinea; "he says that she "e uld not have got a drummer, much less a fall blown private for a guines, even although she had
