Dear Sir Francis-For-I send you my impression from what you showed me yesterday at St. Kula.

I gathered that Sir Christopher. Wen laid his foundatieris on a bol of firma day Come Bftor-7ft. thick, below which is a bed of good graval of about the me thickness. Bulow that in a layer of sand charged with water. ¡

On such a foundation, undisturbed, I think one might safely put simont any building. Wat sand in remarkably firm so long as it is confined.

Although the proposed tramway near the enst end has fortunately been abandoned, I think it probable that a drainage is still going on below the foundations. The fissures you showo me in the piors in the Crypt the ava, and the radiating buttresses at the springing of the Dome drum are alarming. Á more cursory in- spection should be enough to convince any e that the matter can no longer be deglected.

What is 'now

now being done by you and Mr. Macartney is to consolidate the pics by injecting coment grost into all the cracks with the Greathead machine I was surprised to see the very inferior character of the core of the piers in the Crypt, which cosists of lorne rubble of small ones laid in very inferior mortar quite soft and unfi to carry weight. To consolidate this by groutine as you are doing is obviously the the first thing to be done, and to judre from what I anw when a stoo had been' removed from a part of the wall which had-bean grouted the desired result seems to have been attained. This of course involves considerations of. the unequal lead on the central part of the building and the ends of the arms of the Cross, which no doubt creates a dificulty, but I trust pot an ingas orable öző.
