CHARGE OF FALSE PRE- TENUES.
AMERICAN SENT TO PRISON.
At the Magistracy to-day befor M Harehand, George Frederick boley, an American, was charged with obwining chenue for $832 by false pretences from the Standard Oll Company, and also with canh- ing the cheque at the Chartered Bank by false pretencos.
Defendant pleaded guilty. " Inspector Kerr stated that the defendant was employed na barman by Mr. Ruttonjec, but he was dismissed on account of his drinking habits, Mr. Ruttonjes said he would not turn him into the street until he "got another place. Mr. Ratonjee was away on the 10th, and a telephone message cama from the Standard Oil Company, which Soley took, to draw a cheque for 8532 in settlement of an account, Defendant went to the Standard Oil Company, and re presented that he was the manager of the Royal George Hotel, Kowloon. On this representation, the cheque was handed to him. Defendant then went to the Charter. of Bank nud again, stated he was manager for Mr. Ruttonjec. He washed the cheque and went of with the money. A warrant vas issued, and the defendant was arrested by Se.gunt Fox on the Mongolia yesterday afternoon at 2 o'clock. He had booked a passnuo to America.
Mr. Hazeland anid that the offerice was a mither riot npo. but the proseĽU- tar did not were to wish to press the charge. He sentenced Soley to two months hard inbour on each coast, the sentences to rau concurrently. Mr. Hazeland fur- ther ordered that the passage ticket and the balance of the money" found on the du fendant be handed over to Mr. Ruttonjer. Soley was the unusccessful plaintiff in an Action which he recently brought against the Hongkong Hotel for wages due in lin of notice.
