(From Our Own Correspondent.)

DISCUSSION ON HELIGION,

We see that some of the Cantonese" papera are discussing publicly religious questions, and notably the religion that shall be sanctioned by the Confucius is the Representative of the Great Spirit" to whom worship must be paid, and worship too that seems to izdienta that beis equal to Hoaron itself. No notice seems to be taken of Badihisar, Tauism; Mohammedanism ar Christianity. At least we have not seen any roference. It is affirmed bluntly ibat, in the past, gods have been worshipped which are now understood to be no gods st all, and in so far na this has been done, China has wandered from the ideal. The writers soom to have boun. touched by the pirit of the ago. They talk of the tan- dokey to pans from the simple to the ouutused; but now the time as come when it is possible to see more or less clearly, that follies have been committed which must be carrooted, and once this in sean there is no eption but to sweep away the unreal. In the other hand, it is amumed and amaintained that it is impossible to carry on a state withouta religion, and "as there is no other religion worthy of acceptance the Chinese azcept Confucianism, there- ro, he must be exhalted to his true 'poa'tion, and regarded as really being what he has proved himself to be the Re- presentative of the Great Spirit"in China. As far as we have been there has been no attempt made to show wherein Confacius has proved himself to be worthy of this great honour. It is well known wall students of the Classics that he never dreamt for himself this anique position,

though at times there are hints that he

elieved him elf to be the favourite of

lauren, and, therefore, would be spared to complete the work which he had under takan, namely, teach his people morals and good government. What will be the re- ult of these discussions it is impossible yot to say. What with the recaissance of Buddhism, and the growing power of} Christianity, there is likely to be more heard on this important question in the near futuro.
