Great interest has been aroused by the Announcement that cub flowers can be kept alive and fresh much longer whez fed with sugar than when kept in plain.water only, writes the Rome correspondent of the "Daily Express."

The cut flower trade in the United State, amounts to about £4,000,000 a yext, and it is computed that the discovery will tond to reduce the bill by over £1,000,000 &

been testou,.cuch in one hundred different solutions of various mineral and organic substances, but it is claimed that for the vast majority of the flowers a solution of water and either granulated, castor, or cube sugar is the most beneficial.

Three kinde-lilac, lilies, and

sweet pess-suffer from the solution, while three others-marguerites, chrysanthemums, and tulips derive no approat benefit. All the others live longer, and in some cases their life as eat flowers is trebled.

Great care is however, necessary in securing the right solution. Not less than 2 per cont., and not more than 20 per cent., of sugar in the water was found to be the outside limit.

With fifiber varieties of carnations, a 15 per cent, sugat sulition was helpful. With forty-tve varieties of roses, a solution of from 7 to 10 per cent, of sugar prolonged. Jilo,

Forget-me-nots lasted thirteen days in unchanged 'water, seventeen days in water changed each day, and twenty-two days in a 10 per cent. solution of sugar.

These were the only fowers experiment ed on that derived any benefit from a daily change of water.
