tonnage. We have already indicated. that the net addition to the sten tonnage was in the ten years 4,853,751 tons, and the difference between this and the 111 millione added is due to wastage and sales. It would appear that the losses by misadverture and the breaking-up of old ships was equal to only one-fifth of the new ships added, so that were it not for the purchases made by foreigners and colonists, and the expansion of sea- bonne trade, our shipbuilder would be but indifferently bany. In the ten years steamers of 2,212,883 tons were lost or broken up, or otherwise removed Permanently from the ocean; the sales to foreigners made tip 3,601,288 tons, while other deductions brought up the total removala" to 6,998,809 tons. Balancing the account between Britielt and foreign ownow, we find that our sales to them exceeded our purchases from them in ten years by 3,200,760 tons. Some part of this tonnage was for breaking-up purposes, but the greater part was for service. To this extent, and to the extent of the new tonnage built in our yards for 11.30 a.m: Chion Boman Co.'s Mosting them, they are able to compete with
