It would appear that the losses by misadverture and the breaking-up of old ships was equal to only one-fifth of the new ships added, so that were it not for the purchases made by foreigners and colonists, and the expansion of sea- bonne trade, our shipbuilder would be but indifferently bany. In the ten years steamers of 2,212,883 tons were lost or broken up, or otherwise removed Permanently from the ocean; the sales to foreigners made tip 3,601,288 tons, while other deductions brought up the total removala" to 6,998,809 tons.
