TO INDUCE SLEEP. “

HOME QUAINT AEMEDIES FOÉ INKOMNIA.

With the many other derdlopments of civiliation and artificial life, as distio- guished from the purely natori Kfe in the fields and woodlands which our early 'nneos tors lived, has coise the comme of sleep- lesanos, Children sloup Soundly, mast honest Inbouring men sleep well, but many brainworkers and town workers generally suffer from one or other of the varying degrees of sleeplessness.

Dr Joseph Collina, a New York specialist, who has made a special study of the wholu question of inpomain, divides there who suffer from the complaint into three

classes:

1. People who have restless nights, oming to the difficulty in getting to sleep apon retiring;

.ose who experience a profound drowsiness. ending in unrefreshing shun ber, which comes ou early in the evening, and is filled by rapid and apparently muscless awakenings, or by a complete swakening ; and,

3. A clasa technically spoken of ex **dyaomnia," in which inadequate number of hours' leep is apparently obtained, lat there is lacking that feeling of refreshment and invigoration which should come after normal sleep.

SLEEPY BOOKS,

Dr Collins suggests a number of ways by which, his experiments lead him to believe, sleep may induced. Sleeplessness, he Bugs, may be overcome by rending, but great care should be taken as to the choice of books. For instance, sermons would interest a clergyman, and, therefore, would

not tend to produce sleep. The author suggest Sir Thomas Browne's sermons, and also the Palios, both of which he thinks are unfailing in times of trouble.

One of the simplest means of overcoming sleeplessness is to drink a glass of hot water at bedtime. This is usually efectivë, and at times it may be better to add a few mps of spirits of peppermint or aromatic spirits of ammonia in this beverage.

The bedroom should be large, airs, and with the light excluded, also with no untecessary hangings. It should be well ventilated throughout the night. Many people have been greatly henefited by haring two beds in their room. When che one in which they are sleeping feels hot and stifting. they arise and get into the cool bed. Generally this enables them to go to sleep at once.

A QUESTION OF WILL.

D: Collins is of opinion that many people who begin to suffer with siccpless- news alau begin to believe they will never get any more sleep. This frightens them, and if they keep up, such a belief they will actually think themselves into a sinte of chronic insomain. The will, he declaros, can be used just as beneficially in the other way. Turn your whole will power inte convincing yourself that you will sleep in spite of everything-keep at this, and it will prove the greatest help.

Everyone has heard of "conating sheep jumping a fence" As a cure for sleepless pess, and it in an extremely good one. Think of all the sleepy things possible, such as the tick of a clock, the wing of water. or the old story of the locust and the grain. Physical exercise, such as lying on the back, lifting frst one hand and then the other, taking twenty inspirations. opening the eyes when inhaling, and closing them when exhaling, raising the arm and holding it as long ne possible, and various other simple things of this order will fre- quently so weary both mind and body that sleep will follow.
