The great Assuan dam extension works were opened by the Khedive of Egypt yesterday, in the presence of many high officials and prominent personagas, includ ing Lord Kitchener.

The handle used by the Khedira in manipulating the laver for opening the swing bridge suroes' the locks was in the form of a silver statuette of Rapi, the ancient Egyptian Nile god who was supi pased to preside over the destinies of the

THE MAGNITUDE OF THE WORK AND

The Assuan Dam was first brought inte operation ton years ago in the winter of 1302-3-and the heightening, begun in 1907 and just completed, prosented almost 8 many difficulties as the original under. taking.
