NOTES ON WILD LIFE IN HONG- KONG AND SOUTH CHINI.

XL

(By R67. G. A. Bunbury, M.A., Principal,

of Diocesan Training College, Canton,)

These notes are the result of observa- tions made during the past few years, in the intervals of Mission work. They do not profess to be exhaustive. It is hoped, that they may serve as finger-posta to other observers in this Interesting Seld.] ORDER 9.

THE ELDERS.

-Phe-Canton Delta is probably one of the best places in the world for observing the birds of this order, since the physical conditions are all in their favour; the population is thin, the cover provided by crops adequate, and the supply of worms and plentiful. Hence stipe abound, woddecks are not uncommon and lerens and bittern are constantly seen. .at is right to mention here that in many books the berous and the smaller waders are separated far from each other, the former being erected into one sub-order, under the Ciccallformies (Stork Order), the latter into another sub-erder under the Charadriiformes, an order which in- cludes not only the Salpe family but also the Gulls, the Auks, the Sand-grouse and the Pigeons. See Evans, "Birds" pp. 1604 70 and 272). As this order of birds de- prials in Lesh-water fish so largely, it is not surprising that they are as con- spietats by their absence from the Island of Hongkong, us by their presence in the New Territory and the Kwong Chau Prefecture. They seem to disappear as one goes north into the more baly parts of the Province.

HERONS AND BITTERNS.

Herons though in many ways closely allied to storks, differ from them in the Holiewing-important point: the hind to jis on the same level as the others, while in the stalks the hind toe is elevated. In spring the foot-marks of herons may rften be seen in the soft mud just after the young rico has been planted out in this paddy-Reids ; the foot-print shows all 48 four toes.

is entirely white, and is famous for its long plumes at the hape of the heck and on the throat, which org. said to be ten- porarily lost after breeding. Those plumos have often proved, to be the destruction of the poor bird, as well as of, its nestlings, who are loft to starve

after the parent's death, that the avarice ai than or the vanity of woman may enjoy a temporary satisfaction.

3. The

Night Heron (Mycticorax griscus, the Chinese fe-yau-bok. This bird is almost world-wide in its distribu- tien. It stands about 3 feet from toe to crown: the iris of the eye is orange, the bill, which is short fabout fins is gray above. yellow below, the crest is light grey; the general plumage dusky, and the feet black. Wherever there is dease undisturbed foliage, "hs at the White Cloud Mountains, Canton, there ihrac birds are to be found. There is a large colony of them at the Wong Sheng Manas. try near the East Gate, where I have hours of the summer heat: at evenings efu watched them doze away the long

A Natural Remedy

Time was when disease was thought to be due to the direct influence of evil spirits, and exorcism and magic were invoked to cast it out.

Science has taught us wisdom. The evil spirits exist still. We call them "Disease Germs," and they also must be cast out. Once lodged in, the stomach or intestines, fever with its hallucinations, or biliousness with its aches and pains, is the result.

ENO'S

FRUIT SALT

is the approved remedy for driving out disease germs. Its action is quick and thorough. It clears the intestines, rouses the torpid liver to new. life, stimulates the mucous membrane to a healthy action, and cleanses and invigorates the whole digestive tract.
