The production of black tea in Japan is 12 an undeveloped state. Attempts werd made in the past to produce and export | black tos in the Prefectures of Kichi, } Fukuoka, Kumamoto, and Nagaanki, but the i result was anything but satisfactory, the home products proving far inferior to the Indian black tea and not suited to the domestic tante. Towards these, we understand, contributions will be forthcoming, not only from this country, but also from other lands, and efforts will be made to ensure the thoroughly repre sentative nature of the exhibition.

A curious sheet, with a strange history, will form one of the fentures. It comes from Tibet, and bears specimens of twelve stamps, which wore prepared for the Dalni Lama, but never used by that mysterious ruler. Every philatelist concerned with the people who pendues the stamps, 44 well as with the stamps themselves, will be greatly interested in this exhibit.

Many complete collections, sone contain- ing twenty, fifteen, and tea, thousand specimens will be on view. Probably there has never been brought together under one roof such a number of distinct collections, and when the aggregate value is put at a quarter of a million it is believed that the estiunte is not an exaggerated one.

Ceylon product, by adopting the method used in India and Ceylon. Mr Date last year received an order from Brazilian ten merchants for the shipment of 2,000 kin of Japanese black ten. He sent to Brazil the tes raised on his platations in Shidzuoka and Miye, and the shipment met with expected good result. Last Spring he received another large order from Brazil, and recently he was in receipt of an over ture from a Brazilian merchant to become sole agent in Brazil of Japanese black tea, in view of the gradual increase of the demand în favour of the Japanese product there. Encouraged by the hopeful pros- pects of the exports to Bazil, Mr. Date has decided to establish a company for the exportation of the article to Brazil and other foreiga. markets, with the support of the influential business men in Shidzuoka.

The periodical litera- bure did not commence until 1863, when "The Stamp" and "The Stamp Collectors Magazine" were established, to be the

forerunners of more than eight hundred philatelic magazines,

In these days-that is, the early sixties -the hobby VRS developed into systomatic study of stamps, in addition to the mere grouping together of as many specimens as could be obtained. About 1860 the collection of Baron von Ferry, the largest in the world, was commenced. It is reported to be worth £250,000, and to contain a copy of every stamp lesued in every country of worth.

Another large collection is in the British Museum, where it was placed in 1891 upon being bequeathed to the nation by Mr T. R. Tapling. M.P. Fow stamps will be mining, we understand, from the Harticul. tural Hall in October, and the Junior

· Philatelic Society, in whose hands the arrangements lie, will make the exhibition full of interest to the ordinary visitor as well to the ardent philatelist.
