Nantal San is the sacred mountain of Nikko, it has an advantage in appearance 1163 over the other mountains in that it stands alone, on the south it slopes up from Chuzonji lake which is nearly 4,000 feet below its summit, on the west is the Sonjo ga bara plain and on the east an outlying spur both rising from 500 to 1,000 feet above the lake, at the back the Shizu col is about 2,500 feet below the summit. The front way up Nantai is direct from Chuzeul and is one hard continuous ascent up a well worn path. An oasier way is by the Shizu Huts. These are the two recognized routes, an; interesting alternative is up the north western spur from Senjo-ga-bars, the gradient here is fairly easy and the wood not thick except near the sumrnit, a little careful tracking will show an old path inost of the way up, and the climber is
