THE FLUCTUATION OF BANK NOTM IN

- CANTON,

The fortunes of bank notes in Canton are very varied short time since they wore it a discount of about twenty per

cent. That is, a dollar note was worth

- about seventy sight cants." Then,, backups | there was a stiffening of the official attitude towards the circulation of notes, and a threat of posishment against those who would not use them, or unduly depreciated

them, they rose in value to about ninety four cents. This was a grand opportunity of those who were on the look out for the opportunity of sarning an honest penny without working for it. A lot of folk, who posssssed little recommendation, except that they had sharp wits, saw that if they went into the country districte, where the notes were still at a great discount, they would be able to buy them for about seventy fro cents, and then bring them back to Canton and sell them for about ninety. They would have to pay railway fare, of course, but even than they would

ACCIDENT ON THE BANNING 'ROFUMOON

RAILWAY.

A few days ago, when tho train „wa | coming from Sanning, and was near the town of Saowui, a sad accident occurred It was turning a sharp bend, and the line was very narrow. There happened to be three man in the way of the train, and as the road was narrow, they apparently could not escape. If this was not so, they must have beon overtakan suddenly, for thuy were all three run over and dreadfully mutilated. Of course all three were killed on the spot. A couple of days later another necident occurred on the same line. A farmer, seeing the train coming, thought that he would cross the line in front of the train, and no save time. He was ant quick enough, but was struck and also killed on the spot. As he was a young man, and had a wife and family depending on him, the managers gave his family the sum of twenty dollars to assist at the exponses of the funeral. We all know the habit o the Chinese of running in the way of things and it is quite likely that some of the accidents that happen never come to the notice of the public, and especially to the English public; but this is rather a heavy call, and those in charge of the line may have to wire in their road, as is done in tho West,, to prevent people from straying on the line.
