After some proliminary explorations, in 1954 Muravief himself descended the Amur in a large flotilla of boats. Landing at points where Chinese garrisons were still maintained, he convinced himself through personal inspection that this soldiery was a negligible force, and that Russis bad only to set promptly to secure for herself this rich heritage. Fired with these ideas, Muravieff repaired in perso to St. Petersburg: and, after soms de lage, in 1858, owing to the complications brought about by the Anglo-French war against Chins, he was able to conclude with the frontier officials the Treaty of Aigun, in which China ceded the left beak of the Amur to Russia as far as the Ussuri River, and both banks below that river.
