The dock, which bas been enn- structed to lift battleships with a displace. ment op to 92,000 tons, looked, when floated into the Mersey, like an enormous fortress with sidowalls towering nearly 70 ft. above water. It is capable of hold. ing the latest type of super-Dreadnought, and it covers an area of two and a quarter

144 ft. The side walls are 66 ft. high on the outside and sixe 46h ft. above the pontoon that supports the whole structure. Along the floor of the dock run two tows of keel blocks to stendy the ship placed within it, and each of these in 040 ft. long and made throughout of English cak.

It is equipped with a valve bouse, travelling crams, flying gangways, &c.,

and there is a complete service of tele- phones to connect the various machinery depôts with the principal control station in the valve house. Stein power is supplied from eight boilers of marine type worked at a pressure of 155 lbs. to the square inch, Living - accommodation, including mess- rooma, &c., bus boen provided in the part walls for the dockmister, petty officers, and dock crew.
