An Austrisu sergeant, Franz Nemek, showed unusual resolution in committing suicide. When taking his sweetheart for A walk in the country he told her that his superiors had refused him permission to marry, and they thoro and then agreed to die together. She stood still while he fired at her with a service revolver. At the third shot she fell to the ground, and the sergeant, believing ber dead, hanged him- A self from a tres by his bracON..

An extraordinary story was related at the Glasgow Shoriff's Court on July 17. when an attractivo-looking woinen, named Mary Mathieson Mackay, or Munro, pleaded guilty" to a charge of bigamy.
Her legal reponentative stated that the acensed woman was 23 years old, and when only 18-had married a widow in
northern town. She was then an or phan, and her husband, who was 23 years her senior, declared to her that he mar ried her to get his decensed wife's sister out of the house. The marriage was not a happy one, and the couple lived to ether only five months. On one oven. sion, her birthday, she was not quick enough in fetching his slippers, and ho blackened both her eyes, and, in order that the neighbours night not see what be had dane, sail counsel, he and the flesh painted.

petition to the Shanghai Tutuh praying him to address the Consular Body and ask them to abolish the Cotton Testing Bureau which was formed by the foreign fems interested in catton with the sun tion of the Chinese Government. The petitioners state that the Bureau should be, organized by the Chinese themselves, that the firms in question had obtained permission of the former Manchu Govern ment to sanction the organization of the. bureau, but the trade had suffered much inconvenience and the Bureau had lately become very harsh in its examination, even good cotton having been subjected to rejection, qud failures "have been caused as a result to the trade. There-
fore, says the petition, the Manchu dynasty having been overthrown the Chi nese can no longer bear to submit to an
injustice to mercantile concerns resulting from the stupidity of the late officisin.
