THE PORT OF LONDON STRIKE.

HORE TALK OF A NATIONAL ST&IKEL

(Beuter's Service to the China Mail. )

LONDON, June 7.

A gloomier, view of the strike was taken last night, and there were indica tions that the answer of the employers to the proposal of the Government wcald bo nafavourable.

Mr Gosling, in a message to the -Lightermen's Union, said that if the masters did not reply to-day, or if the reply was unfavourable, a national strike would be declared immediately.

The success of euch a movement, however, is considered donbtful in view of the attitude of the seamen.

It appears that the employers mair- tain that a federation in their interest would be impracticable.

Deputy Attempts Suicide.

Luxpos, June 7.

A telegrain from Buda Peath states that on the Bungarian Delegation re- assembling the uproar was repeated.

The Government has urgently tele.(Beuter's Service to the China Mail.) graphed to the employers to attend the Conference and consider further pro- posals regarding the establishment of a Conciliation Board. Some attended and informed the Government that the employers representatives could not be summoned before Monday.

Mr McKenna's attitude with regard to free labour is the chief topic in the Lobby. The Labour members are jubilant but the Conservatives fehr that the Home Secretary's statement will actively discourage the masters frend coming to a friendly settlement on the points that are outstanding; and say that they cannot be expected to be conciliatory if the Government are taking sides against them,

(Reuter's Bervice to the China Mail.)

LONDON, June 8. Two thousand spectators, despite the rain, followed yesterday's golf chinpionship match, which was re- markable for the crowd of artisan enthusiasts who' cheered Mitchell. The newspapers comment adversely on this partisan element, which is new to golf.

Some state that there were cheers" when Ball missed the putt, though the Daily News" asserts that the aristocratic spectators did not con-

ceul. their resentment that a work- man was in the final.

Ball and Mitchell, the latter being chauffeur to Sir Abe Bailey, con

most: ducted themselves in the sportsmanlike, and friendly manner throughout.
