The work in hand which is infanded to be classed with the Corporation has an approximate tourage of 160,000 tons, the largest total which has ever stood upon the books of the society. It is a source of gratification to sho estamittes that 51,000 tons of this tolal are to be built also to the classification of the Registro Nazionale Italiano, and that the associa tion of the British Corporation with this work is to be attributed to the close technical allianes with the Italian society which I have alluded to on previcus occasions.

It is scarcely necessary to ramind" you of the latimale association of the Corporation with all the modern develop mouts in shipping, but as the Diesel and other types of oil engine are now so pro- minatly before us it may be as well to refer to the work of the sub-committee. on interual combustion engines. That committer, personally and brough specialists on the staff, have kept them- selves in closest touch with all the latest inventions and improvements in this de parlement, and bave issued provisional rules for construction which embody in

Reference has already been made to the successful voyage of the Toller across the Atlantic, and to the fact that a sister vessel of somewhat larger power is now under construction. Success bas also attended the auxiliary motor-ship Sound of Jura and two whalers with oil cogines, and we are waiting with great interest the results of the trials of the 7,000-ton oil-driven ship Jutlandia, built by Messrs. Barclay, Curle and Co., and the 3.200 cargo oiler, built by Messrs. Bichardsons, Westgarth and Co., both of high vessels are being built to the classification of this Registry.

**Even more frdis an educative point of view may come from the development of the fleet of coasters with oil motors, which is being built under our survey, for Mr. Paton, of Glasgow, because tho lessons of experience are most easily ap plied during the growth from small things

Mr. Fred. J. Steplian, chairman of the Technical Committee, said The work

Mr. Stephen wil refer specially to the technical aspect of our work, but on the Corporation has now completed, 21 years of active life and may be said to have reached the dignity of maturity, if not of age, I may, perhaps, e allowed to refer again to the benelicent influere which the work of the Registry has had upon the shipping industry of the world induenee far inore important and wide. reaching thau is represented by a inere statement of classed tonnage.

"Take, for example, the construction rules of the society. It may be said that, broadly speaking, the main prin. ciples, the standards of strength and the central idea of the lines upon which structural development should proceed are still the same as when the first Book of Bules was published in 1893. They were then accepted as a great attempt to apply sound technical principles to

The most important event in our frecourd work has been the considers. tion of rules for the load-lines to bolasi signed to full-timed vessels fited with auxiliary steam and oil motors of high Power. The commition gavo clear ex- pression to their views on the subject, in writing, at the Departmental Com mittes in London, on which I had the honour to serve, and which is technically responsible for the tentativo rules now issued by the Board of Trade.
