mode of the present nomination for the vlection of a member to represent the Chamber of Commerce on the Legisla tive Council, I gather from the letter. which the Chairman has just read that No long ago as the 2nd of April the Secretary of the Chamber received a let tor from the Colonial Secretary pointing out that a vacancy would shortly occur and that it was desirable therefore that steps should be taken for an election to be held at an early date. No steps ward taken upon that letter from the Colonial. Secretary between the 2nd of April and the 20th of April Even on the 20th April, no notice whatsoever was sent round to any of the members of this Chumber with regard to the impending election, and I myself, and a number of other gentlemen, had the first notice-ci-this-intended- election this very morning. By this antice which I received I was "hereby reminded" of the special meeting called for to-day. Well, gentlemen, one would naturally suppose from that that it re- ferred to some previous notice sent out to myself and other members, but no auch previous notice was sent-out. There have been advertisements in the papers, but those advertisements, gentleinen, gave absurdly short notice. The adver tisements are dated 20th. April, and they were apparently sent out to the evening papers only in time to appear in one.. evening paper that day. I have sweer. tained that by looking up the files. The notice did not appear in any morning paper until Monday last, and the sbby surdity of the notice is this: that it con tains among other things the following intimation Notice in writing of tho nomination of candidates and their pro posers and seconders are to be lodgui, at.. Just 48 hours before the time for the holding of the meeting." In other words, gentlemen, although no notien had been
