Two Lords of the Examination had been sent straight from Peking, and for many" 627 days the thousands of graduates wrestled, according to well-established rules, with the theads proposed by these two great officials, evolving out of their labours the formed the climax of a student's learn elaborate eight division" essays which

After the many thousands of papers had been examined and the degree had been awarded to the sixty-two successful candidates the Lords of Examination," as a kind of overtime fask, had to award a similar number of military M.A. de- grees to the successful competitors among a largu éroved of military B.A.'s. These candidates had to undergo a small written examination, but so unimportant was considered that numbers "of them made no attempt to study the allotted subjects and paid some substitute to do the little writing that was required.

The great feature of the examination was tho, open-air archery contest. The two bigh officials ant in front of a large. pavilion: Leading up to it was a trench about 150 yards long and a faw foot wide. On the left-hand side of the trench, the side furthest from the two lords, were placed three targets at regular intervals, The candidates were gathered at the end of the trench furthest from the examin. erd. Bach was dressed in a ne silken robe, with a girdle tightly wound round the waist, and a ceremonial cap. In the girdle at the back were stuck two arrows, more than a yard long, and in the hand was held a strong bow, difficult for 6 novico to bend. On the string of this bow was an arrow ready for shooting. Sodie scores of strong, well-groomed ponies were standing near the candidates, ench jo charge of a "miafoo." When the contest was to begin, a candidato would get his bow and arrows ready, and come" to where a pony was held in readiness at the end of the trench. As long as the "mafoo" held the pony it remained perfectly quiet. But as soon as the can- didate mounted it, almost before the second heel was placed in the wide stir. rup, the sturdy little beast shot off a though lie were the arrow released from the bow. So well trained were thres ponies that they started at full speed, Right up the trench they galloped it were a raco for life. The rider hold no reins, and with heels in stirrups, sat firm, ready to let off the arrow he had fixed at the first target. This was usual ly fairly easy. It was different with the second, and third arrows, which had to be taken out of the girdle behind and 148 | fixed on the string before being dis

charged at their targofa.

excitement became intense. One feit, when looking on, that such inen, if well trained, would be capable of great things. For hours the rushes of the ponies can- tinued, and för bours the candidatos con- tinued their shooting. All the while the

Examination Lords" watched the con- test with a certain air of contempt. I those days the civil official treated. The military as if they were a low-down! necessary nuisance. In talking to Chi- nose friends ons would now and again

mark that this old-fashioned arrow. firing examination would before long give way to something very different. This prediction was usually received with good-natured indifference. As the ago said, "I have heard of barbarians being taught by the Chinese, but never of Chi- nese being taught by the barbarians,"*"

Lately I walked again outside the south gute of Yunnan Fu, near the trench up; which the brave panics had gona likte. The military were on the the wind. field once more, but they were changed." The men no longer ware large ceremonial hats and long robes of beautiful blue silk. They were cind in tight-fitting a ket and trousers made of strong coarse

blue calico, and their headdress was small peaked military cap. They were using not bows and arrows but a battery. of quickfiring guns straight from Krupp's works. One after another the various evolutions were gone through, and no notice was taken of a number of foreign crs who stopped and watched. I remem bered how once in the old days'a band of soldiers ran away from their drill. master and crowded around me with the curiosity of a lot of school children. I was carrying in my arms something they had never seen before. The drill-master continued to beat his drum and call bis men back, but they took' no, notice what ever until I had passed by and the cause. of their curiosity had vanished.

It was not so now. This early morn ing--it was about 6 a.m. the drill with the quick-frera went on steadily and carefully. If the Sleeping Buddhs.". was still dreaming of Nirvana and the sweet rest of non-existence, these now soldiers with their German guns were thinking of revolution and of a Chris which should speak on terma of equality
