A special committee, consisting of the Oqvernor-General, Vice-Governor Newton W. Gilbert, Secretary Charles E. Elliott of the department of commerce and polico,. and a representative of trans-Pacific com- mercial steamship lines, mes at the office of the Governor General that morning and discussed the matter in'detail. ·

In view of the coming opening of the New Manila hotel and. the consequent probable great inhur of tourists to the lands, the idea of a direct steamship line between Japan and Manila, for the accom modation of a large number of tourists who do not wish to lose ten days by the trip to and trom the Chins coast, which is now necessary in coming hare, govaramont officials will push the plan.
