HONGKONG ST. ANDREW'S SOCIETY,

Revenge Officer 8. J. Clark charged the master of the steam launch Sin Taikoo before Commander 0. W. Beckwith, R.N, at the Marine Court this morning, for blowing his steam whistle other than for the purposes of berigation. The CTHE ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING ageinst defendant was dismissed with a caution. "A fine of $5 was imposed upon the master of a fishing junk for being in Causeway Bay without the special per mission of the Harbour Master.

While an Indian policemazi was patrol- ingzhia beat at Shantizan he noticed some firewood on the footpath. He went up to. the man who was busy chopping it up and requested him to move it, but the mo refused and hit the policeman on the nose with the back of the choppor. The constable, it appears, followed the man into the shop whom the former was set upon by several others and was so badly handled that he was sent to hospital. At the Magistrasy this morning foar men were . charged with assaulting the constable and the case was remnandod. Two others were also reminded on charges of obstruction."/

The guro is startling one, but it has been calculated-accesarily, of course, by rough and ready "methods-that the total cost of the railway strike to the nation thay tot up to £10,000,000, says the Irish Independent. The returns of the railway companies, for instance, show a total decrease in revenue of about £500,000 for the last week, the worst sufferors in this respect being the London and North „Western Co., whose receipta were down by

E101,000; the Great Western coming next i with £81,000. When the damage to in- dustries and other expenses are taken into account, however, the total loss to the rail- ways will probably reach close ou £800,000 Five milion pounds, according to a financial erport, representa a moderate estimate of the damage done to the manufacturing industry of the country by the strike, while £100,000 in pat down for the expense incured in providing troops and police.

If, as whe stated, 250,000, men struck work, they must, it is believed, have lost

in wages about £200,000. But this doon

not include all the money which, wago-

of the above Society will be held in the CITY HALLA on TUESDAY, the 26TH SEPTEMBER, 1911, at 5.30 P.. for the purpose of receiving the Annual Report and Statement of Accounts for the year ending Slab August; of electing office-bearers for the ensuing year, &c.
