A Nurse Companion

Pneumonia, Pleurisy After Effects,

Wasting and Weakness-

Happy and cheerfal with abundance of energy and good spirits, is how Miss Dunford describes herself from the day she commenced to take Phosferine. Yet before she found relief in Phosferine words failed to express the miserable torments she endured from the effects of pneumonia and pleurisy, the actes, sleeplessness, neuralgia, and warling, which even doctors failed to remedy. No wonder Miss Dunford (eels (after two years of such suffering without ease or rest for the body) that Phosferine has given her a new and better lease of life," for she declares it is entirely. owing to Phosferine that she is actively busy again. Every overwrought wage earning woman will find a message of hope in Miss Dunford's experience, with its splendid assurance of renewed nervous vitality, and absolute prevention of tissue wasting.

DAY

Miss Daisy Dunford. High Street, Shrewton, Wilts, writes: "I have found Phosferine to be a wonderful remedy, Some two years ago I had pneumonia and pleurisy, which left me with terrible pains in my back and legs. Two doctors prescribed for me, but gave me not the slightest relief. I could not sit, lie down, or sleep, on account of the incessant agony, and I became so exceedingly weak and wasted that my friends were seriously alarmed. My appetite failed, and the little food I ate caused indigestion; my life was nothing but a prolonged torture. The doctors said it was a form of neuralgia and sciatica, but the words do nore convey any idea of my fearful state. I thought I would give Phosferine a trial, which I did, and after taking it for a little while, the pains were nct nearly so acute, and finally left ine altogether. I regained flesh, "felt stronger, the indigestion entirely disappeared, and now, thanks to its marvellous aid, my health and strength, is completely restored. I cannot put into words my gratitude for the good Phosferine has done me, for I feel it has given me a new and better lease of life?

Commalier C. N. Roomson, in his.roriów, of armour and nidnance in the Naval Annual," has very properly, mys Bugisen ing, a vigorous protest against the tendency, eren in Britials papers, to depreciate the quality of the British gune or the system of manufacture: This depreciation is not justified. apart altogether from ita pollay, in view of foreign competition. Com mander Robinson says: the Germans have great confidence in their guns, but in addition to the proper pride in their own guns, it may, be remembervä | VALUABLE HOUSEHOLD also that there is a foreign market. för | war material, and it is no new thing in commercial rivalry to depreciate the wares of a competitor in the some line of business. It has been claimed that German guns are lighter, but, xa has been pointed out rupeatedly in Engineering, when high

ballistics are obtained from a light gun, a greater valocity of recoil is eommunicated

to the gun, and this must be resisted. The mountings and the ship's structure, ad- icent to the mountings must consequently be made stronger, so that the saving in weight in the gun itself may be more than absorbed in the additional strength requir ed. Moreover, the barbette may have to be increased in arca, and, in view of the heavy Amour of the walls, there is probably another increase in weight. In fact as Commander Robinson points out, the expedient in sometimes adopted in the British practice of making the guns aYOU heavier than necessary at the leech end

Garmany is said to be contemplating the adoption of the 13.85-iz, gun, and Japan the 14-in gan. Other Power will, no doubt, follow suit, because of the greater destructive power of the larger bursting charge possible with the heavier projectile. Moreover, the beavier shell, does not need such a high muzzle velocity per foot-ton of striking energy, so that there is less erosion in the bore. In this connection, it is interesting to note that the Chief of the Bureau of Ordnance of the United States Navy, Rear Admiral N. E. Mason, states that, owing to erosion, the life of the larger guns is not more than 100 to 150 rounds, There is no idea to increase the rang peasible with the larger gun Admisal Mason points out that at 10,000 yards nearly all of a battleship is above the horizon, as seen from the sights of a gun?

25 ft. above the water. At 15,000 yards all, or nearly all, the actual hull of a ship drops below the horizontal level, leaving only the superstructure and upper works visible. 20,000 yards the strip of the upper works which would show above the herizon would be too narrow to be of any cal value as a target.
