SCIENTISTS AND MONKEYS.
What a Series of Experiments
Mas Demonstrated.
By using monkeys scientists at the Government Hospital for the Ineste at Washington have just concluded a remark able series of experiments, which it is claimed will do much to dispel the mystery which surrounds the functions of the brain
colour, it was learned that a monkey would avoid it by its colour alone.
These experiments covered the greater part of one year, and they proved beyond reasonable doubt that monkeys do pos- ass the lower niental powers that humans | possess, but that such powers differ from those in man and are generally, but not always, inferior to similar powers in man. For instance, they possess perception.. sometimes inferior and sometimes superior to that of man. The sense of smell or than in man, while the ease of touch is scent is more highly developed in monkeys inferior.
All of the experiments prose that monkeys have but faint trace of the higher it man, and will aid in solving many prepossess. They show, also, that monkeya povec-that of reasquing, &c., which man blems the medical world has long been know the difference between colours, and atadying. The principal result of the that they have's practical memory suitabla But it in not known experiments, says Mr W. L. Altdorfar, for their purgono. writing in the Philadelphia Record, in that the cortical motor areas-the parts of the brain which controls action-in the brain of man are similar to those in spes. This has been a problem the medical world has been trying to solve for many years.
The experiments ware conducted under the direction of Dr. 8. L. Ymaz, lentifie -director at the hospital, who says that way has been found to determine the exact location of the membranes, mascles, and Fouila which control the various notions of mea. The experiments with monkeys have pot proceeded for enough to cover more than a tiny part of the vast undiscovered. area of the brain of man, but the results obtained are definito, and justify the con- Blusion that extensive work with the braida of animals will solve the problems which aro vexing the medical world today in
