The rules for foretelling the weather which Chinone"farmers have framed and tested in the course of centuries or rather
thousands of years, are in reality more effective than many Occidental prophecies of critical days and the like; for they are based in great part on close observation of Nature, which was greatly stimulated by the old lunar calendar. It is true, the influence of superstition also is marked enough in the formation of those maxime, and in these cases, of course, the prophecy does not so often come true. The Chinese farmer clings with unshakable faith to his weather rules and gous by them unware- ingly in sowing and harvesting, and also 70s in his domestic af irs, betrothals, marringes, etc., not less than in his agricultural Oy | Jalmars. But these weather-rules are of far the most importance with regard to the cultivation of the fields. Thus moraing-red is hull the progn- tie of rain, evening-red of fine weather, The appearance of the sun in the morning gives a sigh of the weather for the day. An early son “looking like the moon" indicates cold North wind. If the sun's dise becomes visible very early on Summer mornings, rain is inevitable; it comes later from the clouds then it will become so bot daring the day that even
South wind is the early part of the day the crane will droop." The direction of the wind is also of course a good weather-sign.

Weather signs are also derived from the actions of animals. If the cry of the heron is heard in the morning, the weather will be cloudy, if in the evening the morrow will be clear. Frogs quacking and ants busily running about indicate rain. If s dog sneezes the day will be misty. Abundance of gossamer is a sign of a fruit- ful autema. Gossamer comes, according to the peassat's notions, from the bfilky Way the great white river of Heaven.
