The statements which have been made that, by way of replying to s 14in. oaval gan lately adopted abroad, the British Ad- miralty have ordered trials to be made of a 1. gun are, to say the least, premature, Hongkong, October 2, 1908 states The Times, For some time past designs have besu got cut in this country" for 1bin, and 16in, wire wound guns, but at present no guns of the calibres aro îù existence, nor have any orders for their construction been given by the naval aathor ities. The further statement that the 15in. gun will be of 50 calibres in length is in itself a reason for doubting the authenticity of the announcement which has been made. A 15in, gun of 50 calibres would be 621ft, | Ion, or about 12ft. longer than the 13.5in.. which is now being mounted in the Orion and Lion. It is most improbable that guna of such a length would be made. There is only a difference of 's fow inches between the length of the 13.5 in. and the 12in. of 60) calibres which it superseded, while the tin.

The o does not appear to be any particular: reason at the present moment why in this country an advance should be made to s lir gun. In the first placo, we have four ahip in the water and two nire about to be launched, all of which will carry the 13,5in. gun, whereas no other Power haa iny vessel so far advanced which will mount a heavier gue than the 12in. In America It is intended to put a 14in. naval gan into the Texas and New York, but was of these | ships has only just been begun and the other has not yet been laid down. - It Germany the fact that in the published lists of ordinance manufactured by the Krupp. firm a 14in. guo is included has given a to the supposition that a gun of this calibre will be mounted in some of the vessels now under construction. It is possible, how. ever, that this is a fortress gon. The third. Brazilian ship-building at Elswick, will SAN FRANCISCO and American Fort len, it is reported, bo armed with 14. guns. Such is the reported programs in ordnance made by foreign Powers, and, it is wore considered recessary or expedient, there are 1fin. guns made and tried in this country which could be put into British ships.
