A venus of the population of Hùngkong is to be taken on May 20th, and in order that our renders may test their skill ip estimating the growth of the population Bince the last census the China Mad is promoting a competition under three beads, aking its salseribers to predict the non- bors of(1), The total civil population : (2), Chinese population: (3), European and American population. We have, for the guidance of competitors given the figures for the last two numberings, Allenmpetitors: have to do is to cut out the carpous, 61) in their estimate and forward them to our office, with the words "Census Competition" in the toy left-hand corner of the envelope. Competitors may send in as many coupons as they desire. A prize will be given for the most correct estinate under each hend.

In 1906 a partial consus was takeu, being conned to the original Colony of Hongkong and that part of the Now Territory which lies south of the Kowloon range of hills. This partial conaks showed a total civil population of 319,800, but it should be pointed out that the portion of the New Territory not included in this census possessed a population of 85,011 in 1902:
