A costs of the population of Hongkong is to be taken on May 20th, and in order that our readers may text their skill in estimating the growth of the population since the last census the China lail is promoting a competition under three beada, asking its subscribers to predict the num bors of-(1). The total civil population: (2), Chinese population: (35), "European, and American population. We have, for the guidance of competitors, given the figures for the last two numberings. All competito 'bave to do is to cut out the coupons, fill in their eminate and forward them to our cftice, with the words Cams Competition" in the top left-hand cutter of the envelops. Competitors may and in as many coupons as they desire.” A prize will be given for the most correct estimate under sach head. In the case of a tie the estimate firat opon. ed will be adjudged the winner,

NB. The last complete census of the Colony was taken in 1901, when the total civil population was officially returned at 283,200. In 1906 a partial consus was takon, being confined to the original Colony of Hongkong and that part of the New Territory which lies south of the Kowloon range of hills. This partial census showed total civil population of 319,803,..but should be pointed out that the portion of the New Teritory not included in this census possessed a population of 85,011 in 1901.
