A census of the population of Hongiung is to be taken on May, 20th, and in order that currenders muy test their skill in estimating the gowth of the population since the last census the China Muis promoting a competition under three heads, asking its subscribers to predict, the num bers of--(1), The total civík population. (2), Chinese population“ (Europehu and American population. We have, for the guidance of competitors, given the figures for the last two numberings, All competitors have to do is to cut out the coupons, All in beir estimate and forward then tontar office, with the words. ** Cursas «Competition" in the top left-hand corner of the envelope. Competitors may send in as song coupon
as they desire. A prizu will be given for
the
most curfect estimate under each head. įt

*N.B, ----The last complete census of the Colony was taken in 1901, when the total civil population was effcially returned at a partial census w39 283,000. In 1906 taken, being contined to the original colour of Hoogkong and that part of the New Territory which lies scuth of the Kowloon range of hills. This partial caouuy showed total civil population of 314,803, but it ahould be pointed out that the portion of the New Territory not included in this census possessed a population of 85,011 in 1901,

N.B. In November, 1000, a partial consus was taken, this boing confined to the original Colony of Hongkong and that part of the New Territory which lies south of the Kowloon range of bills. This partial consus gave the total Chinese popu lation (land and Soating) as 307,388, but it should be burte in mind that the portin of the New Territory not included in the partial census possessed a population of 80,011 in 1901, the year when the last full census was taken. The total Chinces popu- lation for the whole. Colony in 1901 was 274,043
