HONGKONG HORTICULTURAL

SOCIETY.

The annual report of the above Society states that the recent show was probably the most successful one yes hold. The list of members elows a slight falling off, 106 for 1010 against 114 for 1909. To com mittes hope that all mombers will do all in their power to induce anyone interested in gardening to join the Society.

Complaints have again been made of infringement of the rules by exhibitors, Those who hare many exhibits canont, of course, give much personal supervision to each, and the trouble appears to arise here. As the committee cannot keep a staff of datootives to ensure adhesion to the rules,. they would ask exhibitors to as every endesrour to instruct their gardenera în the rules and to see that their instructionA are carried out. The principal cause of complaint has been the filling, up of pots: with plants grown in cther places. The rule in that al: planta shall be grown in the pots in which they are shown..

Some discussion has arisen as to the date of the show. For the last two years the date has been fixed by referendum to the previous year's exhibitors. It has been auggested that the show should be held on :

Monday and Tuesday, so as to give exhibitors, whose time is fully occupied on week days, the Sunday for staging their exhibity; thi would, however, entail Son. day work on many who would object to it. Another suggestion has been that the show should be on a Friday and Saturday, so that buy men may be able to go there, on Saturday afternoon. The Committos think | they cannot do better than leave the matter to the members at farge. If all members desizing a Saturday show-and-all-thoni- opping it will write their wishes to the Secretary before the end of June the wish of the majority will be acted on. It will be aastimed-that-those who do mob write ate indiferent.

another dificult question is the fomu in which prizes are to be given Several exhibitoru bara spoken against the money prizes, as tending to make the show is inere pot busting affair. This is to some extent the case. A low year go the rule waA mada that those who took first prize for

the group of pot planta sad for the tray of i vegetables would be ineligible no prize winters in other classes of similar exhibits. That it is tho destre of asthee

exhibitors merely to take the gymt number of prizes,

is shown by their failing to enter for those groups the winning of which excludes them from other prizes. As it is Boult to know what to inbeitate for all money prizon, it is proposed to have articles of use or craiment for a few more of the principal classes than is now the case, and to limit the amount which may be taken in money by say one exhibitor je 825.00, or, to

limit the number of prizes which musy be retained by one exhibitor.
