#ses of the population of Hongkong is to be taken on May 20th, and in order that our readers mai test their skill in estimating the growth of the population since the last census the China Acil is promoting a competition under three hende, asking its subscribers to predict the num bers of (1), The total civil population: (2), Chinese population: (3), European and American population. We hare, for the guidance competitions, given the guros for the last two numberings. All competitora have to do is to cut out the coupons, fill in their estimate and forward them to our

offer, with the words Consus Competition" in the top left-hand corner of the envelope. Compotitars may send-in as many coupons as they desire. A prize will be given for the host correct estimate under each head. In the case of a tie the estimate first open. ed will be adjudged the winner.

N.B. The last complete cunsus of the Colony was taken in 1001, when the total civil population was officially returned at 283,906. In 1900 a partial census wAS taken, Faing confined to the original ('olony of Hongkong and that part of the Now Territory which lies south of the Kowloon range of hills. This partial census showed a total civil population of 319,803, but it should be pointed out that the portion of the New Territory not included in this cenius poncased a population of 85,011 in 1901

N.B-In November, 1906, a partial consus was taken, this being confined to the adiginal Colony of Hongkong nad that part of the New Territory which lles south of the Kowloon moge of hills. This partial cennus gave the total Chinese popa- lation (lund and £icating) as 307,388, but it should be borne in mind that the portion of the New Tarritory not, included in the partis census possessed a population of 85,011- in 1901, the year when the last full cansua was taken.
