·NAVIGATION HIPROVEMENTS

IN TONKIN.

In view of the fact tint one of the greatest needs of China at the present moment is the rendering navigable of many of her waterways it. la interesting to nețe.cortaîo. improvements of this character which have been carried out in Tonkin by Chpt G. von Tex, surveyor and hydrographer, Inte of the Tonkin Mines, Syndicate.

Writing to the China Mull, Capt. von -Tex says that he was the first man to render navigable the river in Tonkic named the Song Tao Nam, a river which runs in an easterly direction from Haiphong for a dia- tance of about till miles. When he arrived on the spot the river was only navigable up to military station named Lum. From thence up about six and ́s half miles the river was practically dry, after which big rapide were encountered. The main object

view in making the rivor and the rapids navigablo was to facilitate the bringing down of oro from the Syndicate's mine to Lam and thence to Haiphong, Great difficulties vosu encountereil work, inasmuch as from Lam upranis there were so villages along the route.
