THE BARMAID QUESTION.

Definition Difficulties.

At the meating of the Hongkong Legisla tive Council yesterday afternoon, an in- toresting discussion arose on the barmaid quation during the consideration in com mitteo of the Bill which is to consolidate the inw-relating to intoxicating liquors,

Hon. Attorney General pointed out tant a barmaid hnd now been defined. barmaid meant any woon other than the licensee (i a woman) or the wife of a licensee who was employed to sell intoxicat ing liquors behind a bar or within any licensed promises.

Hewett I take it the lin facing this clause was to adopt what is commonly known as the American system that no woman should be employed in the | bar at all. According to this clausu na no stands, there is nothing to prevent girls being engaged in the bar so long as they do not actually handle the drink, If the idea is to prevent girls and women serving in the har I don't think that this definition meets the cao. In America no women are allowed in hars at all, and I presume that is the ides we are working on at the present monieut. In all those grog chops in Hongkong shere nro girls, daughters or nieces, and they walk about and make themselves agreeable while a coolio sarves the liquor.
