CHRISTIAN” LITERATURE
SOCIETY
The Christina Literature Society for China buat just issued its 20ml annual roport, the first portion of which is devoted to a comprehensive survey of the geneml
conditions amidst which the society carries
on its work. The many influences which are shaping the new China are, on the
whole, favourable to the speedy propagation
of Christianity. The inauguration of 're-
presentativo government has brought to the fore the leading men in each provines; to whom, by means of the new postal systems, literatare can now be freely sent; while the now school and collogen are breaking up the stagnation of thought and causing the students to seek for the best and truest things the West has to offer.
A striking example of the influence of the society is afforded by the distribution of 277,000 posters giving facts about Haley's Comet, which revolutionaries·
would fain point to as prognosticating dynastic clinnges.
30
During the year the society published new hooks, making 47,000 pages. Twenty-four of the society's bucks were reprinted during the year to meet the demand. In addition to these books, the Chinese Christian Revicio and the To Tung. Pao have a wide circulation. The society has roudared valuable service to the cause in generát by inaugurating a series of China Mission Year books, the first of which under the editorship of Dr. MacGillivray, was published in October. The missionarica in Japan have had such a volume now for Toight years, and the welcome extended to the ... 6 China Mission Year Book of 1910 is suffici. icent proof that it meets a great need. The book comprises 30 chapters, with 431 pages, as well as appendices of 43 pages and a 8 missionary directory of 74 pages.

The society is sadly in need of men, and
Dr Richard during his recent visit to Eng.
Land put the need before the various boards, which are now considering it. Tho China Eraergency Committee has given very welcome assistance during the year.
It many he doubted, saya the Statesman, whether those who so ardently idroented Coronation durbar in India reckoned with
the possibility that one result of that inno- vation would be that no representatives of
India will be required in England at the Coronation. Reuter's telegram, however indicates that this is likely to be one effect, though the final decision has not yet been.
