DR. MESNY'S DEATH.

The following details of the tragic death at Harbin of Dr. Mesny, the French bacteriologist, are translazuli by the Jupon Chronicle from the Novaya Zhion of the

13th instant as follows :-

"At 8 o'clock last night Dr. Musny, director of the Tientsin Medical School, engaged from Mukden by the Chinese authorities to eliberate measures against- the plague epidemic, inccumbed to plague" at the isolation hospital t Harpiu. The courageous French bacterial- ogist threw himself, heart' and stul into the fight against plague and, trusting to fate, apparently hid himself open to the risk of infection by not taking any special

· precaution when handling the patients. Three days ago Dr Megry examined a plague patient in the hospital, and rendered i him medical assistance. The same night Lg Linsef was takuo ill 4an expericne- cod hateriologist, he knew that his fate was scaled. He at once dressed, nude his way to the isolation hospital, and notified Lis condition to the inedical authorities. His Russian colleagues did all they could to save his life, but he diagnosed his own case and announced that there was no hope," He said that he had still, two days to livg. and begged that his family should not be informed until after his death. Knowing that nothing could save him, Dr. Meny. concentrated his efforts to the Insto preventing others from catching the discare from him, and even refused to allow his temperature to be taken, owing to the contact with the thermometer. Thus the distinguished doctor experienced the pro found tragedy of knowing that bo was doomed, that with every moment la pla was coming out, and that there was not the slightest ray of hope.
