THE OIL WAR,

Situation on the Eastern Petroleum Market.

On the occasion of the launching of a new motur-driven tauk steamer, the Vul canus, on December 17, Mr Duterding, the head of the Royal Dutch-Shell Cmbine, gare some particulars concerning.. the situation in the petroleum market. He declared that at present there are no negotiations going on between the Standard Oil Company and the Royal Dutch-Shell Combine, inasmuch as the latter only wishes to negotists on the basis of absoluteequality. which the Standard Oil Company apparently is not willing to grant at present. This, no doubt, points out how sharp the war between the two 'concerns is at present; but Mr Deterring reiterated his further statements that there has already, on various. cccasions, been friction between both groups in the past, and that-in-enchcasa..ney agreements word reached in the end..

The Royal Dutch-Sbell Combice, have re solved to instal those motorn in some dow tank ships, and the first of these steumers,. the Vulcanus, has now been launched. The Valcanus in a 1,000-ton vessel, and whenit proves to work as well as the heads of the ' big combine conâdently assume, four mure steamers will be brought into operation, two having the same tonnage as the Vulcanus, one of 4,000 toas, and one of 5,000 tons.

if tank steamers of these huge dimensions can safely ba ran ca the motors there will be no longer any difficulty whatever in the way of their general adoption on other ships.
