THE SHANGHAI SENSATION."

We are now able to give a few details in connection with the case in which Bir H. J. Craig, a womber, of the Shanghai Municipal Council, and managing director of Messrs Craig and Co., was recently charged at H. B. M's Police Ceurs with fraud; though pressure on our space does. not allow of a full statement of the case for the prosecution.

The charge was couched in the follow- ing torm: Eur. that you on the 10th March, 3010, did conspire with one) William Pitts and on divers other dates between the last mentioned day and the 16th May, 1910, unlawfully, fraudulently, and deceitfully, did amongst yourselves conspiro, combino, confederate and agree together, and with divers other persons whose names are unknown to the com pliimant (the Crown Advocate) by divers false pretences, unlawful and subtle ways and means, stratagems and devices, to obtain and aequire to yourselves and from the Siak Indrapoern Ruhbor Concessions, Ltd., divers large sums of money and car- tiacates of the said company and to cheat and defined the said company thereof.

Mr S. H. McKean appeared to prose- cuta, while Mr R., N. Macleod defended, Mr J. C. E. Dougies watched the case on behalf of the Sisk Indrapoera Rubber Con- cessione, Ltd.

Mr Maseno, in opening, said the charge which had been laid against Mr Craig was a clurge of conspiracy. The nature of that conspiracy was that although the ultimate objet that was, Mr Craig's motive in ob-i taining certain mcosys and shares from the company wouldhave been a perfectly legal motive, still the means of obtaining thei modoy were unlawful to the knowledge of Mr. Craig, and that Mr Craig at that time conspired with one Williami Pitts in order. to attain his object. He conspired with Fitta in so far as he and Fitts agreed to wond to bao. Nijhuis in Singapore s tole gram in which they requested Nijhuis to wire to Indenre Craig and Co. in Shanghai, certain particulars with reference to an estate, bot that telegram was not to bene Dr. Nijhuis's name, but in bear the nemo of a man caled Francken, and it when portion of their conspicacy at that time to represent to the directors that Franckon was, a nominee of Messra Donaldson and Burkina-bowers attorneys
