As the point was raised at a National Free Church Council reception to some retarand: mission«ries it is not unlikely that any interesting controversy on this subject mag spring up among religious workers.

Sir Joseph has given his views on the subject to a Morning Lender representative "I ploaded for a freer hand for bur mis. sionaries in pagan lands" said Sir Joseph. RESULT OF SUPPRESSING POLYGAMY. As result of free and frank converas tions with missionarios, especially a distin- guished missionary who recently returned from Africa, Sir Joseph holds that it is quite impossible to judge the West African Eative by European standards their moral aystem is contarias and couturies behind cum. The wholesale suppression of poly- gamay-apart altogether from the question

MANILA TWIN SUREW STEAMERS & TIENTSIN STEAMERS har superior tionable than polygamy. For reasong which it is impossible to discuss in detail sommodation with Electric Eight throughout and Electria Fans in the Staterooms a

SHANGHAI LINE, ◄◄ in the Prass or on the platform, a sudden change from polygamy would probably be deeply injurious to the social and personal conditions of the native woman. You not suddenly grait the whole morality of a 2,000 years old civilisation upon hathen maces.Eving in the wilds of Africa. It takes time to uproot long-established radial customs among savage tribes."

"The ideal is monogamy, of course," Sir Joseph maintained, and our mission aries always uphold that ideal, but it seems to me that we must wait for this botter and higher morality to evolutionise among the natives, aided by all the encotrage- ment which the missionary can give to the movement.”

RECOGNISING A FOLYGAMIST CHRISTIAN..

In the meantime, Sir Joseph urged, the Churches-could give such recognition with- in the Christian: Church as would secure membership, for the converts, even though they do pot abandon polygamy-though possibly a distinction might be made be tween the man who can maintain the higher standard, monogamy, and the weaker, man, who remains a polygamist.

We have to recognise," he added, that the lower plane of morsia oa which these natives live is not a conscious in- duigence in sin or immorality."

The best solution, Sir Joseph believes, is to leave the problem to the missionary, the man on the spot, and for the Churches not to tie his hands too much, as a rigid rato upon polygamy might prove a very serious hindrance to the missionary's work among natives.
