Mr Curwad, the Headmaster, returned from ears on the 20th Febmary, 1900, and so was alile to take chargs immediately after Chinese new year holidays. He continued in charge until the 14th instant when he was appointed to net as Hostmaster at Victoria Hnglish School, and I wasppointed to act in his stead. In the beginning of the Fear Mr Ng Tung Chau was transferred to Warchal on promotion, and Mr Leong Shui was appointed to take his place. This left acadey for one 4th Grade Asst. Master witch was filled by Mr Cheong Hok Chau. The school year started with nearly 300 boys on the roll, and an average attendance of 201, After midsummer holidays, we received instructions not to admit any further applicants, and to endeavour in avery way to reduce our numbers to the ap proved limit. Partly on this account, and partly becacss of the increase of the feer from two to thrao dollars, the attendanes fell off considerably; but even at It lowost

Of the Queen's College scholarships som peted for the beginning of 1909, this school was again.forsanate in securing three out of the four. The successful students were Tee Yang Sting, 1st with 93% marks; Chan Tin Sung, 2nd with 80% marka; and L Shu Fan 3rd, also with 80% marks; and the 5th boy Chan Hi Wo was Puccessful in obtaining the ith scholarship owing to the vinner unfortunately having to give it up. because of privato troubles. This boy, Chan Hi Wo, gained a scholarship at Tai Po district school in the New Ter ritory in 1907, which gave him a four years course at Yaumati. During bis stay with us he made very rapid progress, completing the four years course in two,

Though

he was really over age the scholarship was granted to him as an onocaragacent to fatare scholars from these outlying echools, where the pupils come from very poor families. Eleven boys entered Queen's College from this school during the year.

My word, it was truly "nippy" la the sun-kissed island of the Petticoat String. last Monday and Tuesday. Some of my acquaintness wars prepared to host that there was frush at the Poak, but I believe 59 Fahr. was the lowest point reached, But that is cold enough in all conscience to people accustomed to the long summer heats of Hongkong. The cold snap has it compensations, though. I saw men briskly tramping about the place who in crdinary times can only be seen in the public streets sungly assoused in their chairs. I under stand, too, that appetites improved all round and the conmmption of plain provender was phenomenal. Sa 'tis an ill North wind but blows nobody any good.

greatly appreciated by the boys. There is one great draw back in this connection, however, and, that is, that many of the boys live a long! way from the seboot, and in order to reach

their homer before dark, have to start on their way immediately after school it over. This prevents many of them, who are opt at the diferent games, from enjoying their share of the fun. One very encouraging item, on the other hand, is the financial halp we have received to our Sports Club from former pupils of the school. In clos ing I should like to convey the very hearty thanks of the school to these young men who, by their lively interest and practical help have set such a good example to those who will follow them.
