TWURNISHED for Six Months from 19h." LA HACIENDA-WEST, 78, The
Referring to the report of the committee regarding the removal of ceilings and stair. Kinings the President said he thought-it- would be better if the matter was refurred back to the committee as the campaige was useless unless they could do the whole thing. They ought to either make the houses rat-proof or drop the thing altogether and considering the amount of hostility which would be incurred ho thought it would be better to drop the whule thing.
Mr Shelton Hooper said, he did not quits | Fest. understand the President's parks and was still in favour of removing the ceilings and stair linings in certain districts of the Colony. He did not think that a house which was not thoroughly ratproof should bo declared unfit for habitation. It they went so far as that then they would have | to begin with Government House where he believed a case had occurred some years ago and which he believed was not råtproof at the present time. If they did that things would become simply unbearable.
Mr Lau Cho Pak said he understood when the quastion was first brought up i was to-deal-with coolis houses and now they were gradually interfering with every. Chinese house in the Colony.
Colonel Bedford said be would like the removal of ceilings and stairlinings to be rapidly pushed forward.
Farther discussion onsued and it was agreed that the matter be referred back to the committea.
It is reported from Tokyo that the Nippon Yusen Kaisha has decided to lay out a typical Japanese garden, about 100 taubo in area, at the Anglo-Japanese Ex- hibition. Two models of the Kaisha's steamers will be placed in the centre, and
