Germann Ship's Officer Sentenced

to Imprisonment.

One of the most extraordinary cases which have come before the public in Shanghai, myn the Shanghai af ercury, was the subject of a criminal tria! in the German Consular Court when an officer of the mercantile marine was sentenced to two years' imprisonment for a series of rab- beries. The accused was Harman Witzler second "officer of the steamer Meiloo, and related in Court the evidence stowed that he had practised thiering in the mast systematic manner for the last year. D 'Noy and four Angervors heard the case.

...It was shown that the accused, who was arrested on November 1st had on thres occasions opened the Germann mail-baga which the dele was carrying between Shanghai and Hankow. As second officer
