SIR DIGBY BARKER AT

LUCKNOW.

General Sir George Digby Barker, at one time G.O.C., and later Officer Administer lag the Government at Hongkong, fathor of Lady. May, is spending the years of his well-earned retirement në Claro Priory, in Suffolk. The other week, on the Occasion of Lucknow Day, the Bus Anglian Daily Times, of Ipswich, minde special reference to his exploits at Lucknow- during the Mutiny, and from its article we take the following extracts:-

a

Of all the soldiere who advanced to the relief of Lucknow, popular fancy has most fixed or Sir James Outram. Years before the Mutiny, General Sir Charles Nap or bad acclaimed him a the "Bayard of India" and he hid well earned the title. When the advance to Lucknow was in preparation, it was Uuerara who had every Hght to claim the command, but rather than doprivo. Havelock of that honour and glory, he elected to serve under him as a volunteer and a private soldier. Colin Campbell, in a general-order to the Army, logised Outram's "disin- terested generosity and a-lf-sacrifice on point of all others dear to a exldier." Nor on this all, for Ontram. marifced his share In the prize money of a quarter of a million, which would have beco righty times what he received as a private soldier. Poor inz though he was, the "Bayard of India" he neglected all money prizes, and only cared to do his duty, as Lawredge tried to do him. There is no need to recall all the incidents of the daily fights in the march up to Luck- now. Outram, with his cane, was always In the thick of the fight. The elder and the younger Ravelock both covered them. ~Wolves with glory, and the names of Barrow, Olpherta, Neill, Johnson, Maude, Brosyer,
