In tho Hwolan district things have got gradually worse for several years, until the attention of the Fation Viceroy bas bean specially called to the parlous condition of the neighbourhood, and quite recently the chief Magistrato kas been changed.

Owing to the troubles necessarily arising from this unsatisfactory state of affairs, decasionally the rative Christians go involved, as is not unnatural. They are continually being asked to share in the fighting, or at least to subscribe to- wards funds for gins and ammunition. Refusing to have any part in such lawless warfare, they suffer ignominy and perssou tion. Towards the end of June a Chinees Ohristian young mat was on his way to Church on Sunday morning, when he was sot upon by some armed men and urged to join them. On his refusing on the ground that he was a Christian and on his way to morning worship, he was shot down at close range, and one man with a sperr thrust it into him from behind, so that the pour follow died from bis fata! wounds within an hour." The native Pastor and others were with him to the end, but the men who murdered him refused to give up the body, and thruafoned the Pastor and other Christians with further reprisals if they made any row about the caso. But silence in such a brutal murder was impos- sible, and the Chinese authorities word appealed to, with the result that a deputy
