NAS, August 7. Rain has been very plentiful, and the ied crop excellent thaneghout this district with the people contented. Many of the sugar cane fie'ds which were neglected and deserted during the late years of trouble have been brought under cultivation again, and there has been a large and increasing export of sugar, much of which I believe is destined for the Japanese market.

While the river was in fond, the German gunboat Tringtau was able to make the trip to Langehtu on the Tonkin frontier. She did the return jourley in loa thans day so high was the water and so rapid the current. All went well except, that the masthead came in collision with a telegraphi wire and vealed repairs in consequence !

The Military Department controlling the "new" saldiers hus been transferred to Kwelin, while the big Military College at Lungchau is moving here very shortly.

Mr Trepkowsky, our Harbourmaster. bas gone on holiday and his place has been taken by Mr A. Johnson.

The high water has attracted a large Sumber of steam hunches Nanning to share in the carrying trade and as regards motor beats wo have had theor arriving and departing almost simultaneously.

Dog Heat is in great demand in Nanning and fetches a higher price hers than any other meal. This morning I saw a poor wretch gagged and bound being carried off on the end of a pole for slaughter-the other dogs all along the street were crazy with tarron Nanning dogs gan recognise a dog butcher oven when there is no visi ble signs of his trade, and his progress -through the streets. is heralded by angry.
