On Friday Q. M. S. Barnfather, RE, played and defeated Gunner Theakstone and, although the time taken to finish was not quite what might have, best expected, never at any time did the game lag. The "Ganner" was certainly seen to more advantage than his less showy op- ponent, with breaks of 26,33,20,18 (2) and 17 (2): but Barnfather was content to take the bans as they come along, and in this way qualified for the second round winning by 39 points.

The game between Master Gunner Day, R., and Gunner: Heathcote, R.A., does not call for any special comment, Heathcote wigning what proved to be rather a tame game by 35 points.

O.Q.M.S. Stoneham, RA, was unable to play his game with Cpl. Lidstrome on Wednesday owing to the uncertainty of the weather, and the game was postponed, Gunner Allan, R.A., failed to put in an appearance on Thursday night, and no explanation being. forthcoming, the game was awarded to Sapper Grant, R.E.

BOTAL ENGINEERS v. Süra co.... In this match the teams were ` as follows:—

Engineers: Marab: Goodyer and MoCrory Hayward; Holmes, Coxon and Barton.

Artillery: West; Hardy and Debentara: McAllister; Thomas, Show and Bentho.

Throughout the first half of the game the Engineers were the most aggressive although they were only able to acre one goal, while in the second half they recorded two more goals, the Artillery being successful in scoring only once. The result was:--Engineers 3 goals; Artillery 1.

It is urged that this was an agreement for the performance of an at which involved the violation of the law of a friendly state, and was therefore an illegal, or at any eats an invalid contract, unenforceable at law and in respect of which no liability could scarue..

I may say at once that I do not accept the plaintiff's story, and that de believe that of the defendant aty any rate with respect to the alleged consideration. I must then consider the adegacy of this defence.

This Court has, of course, no judicial knowledge of the law of a foreign country. But evidence was given by the gentleman performing the duties of Consal-General of the United States in this Colony, which satisfied me that, under the statutes dealing with immigration into the United States of America, Chindio, with the exception of members of 'bertain special classes, are for bidden to enter the country. Breach of the law is punishable with fine and im prisonment. Now on the evidence I find that the men in respect of whors thess agreements were entered into were at members of any exempted class, that they could only enter the United States in breach of the provisions of the Immigra tion Law; and that it was fully under-Lance-Corp.
