TYPHOON SIGNALS."
There is a paragraph in the issue of Jo 19th, 1879, to the effect that a notice has reen issued by the Harbour Master stating thit in the event of bad, wanther being #P- prehended by his Department a black' drum will be hoisted at the Harbour Office Eagstaff and a similar sign. hpisted at and a gun bred from the Police Hulk. There is added an intimation that these signals, will not be considered as relieving masters of ships from their proper responsibilities nt are intended only as calling attention
of the mercantile marins to say change of weather which is expected by the Depart ment In antar sue it is recorded that notices explaining the signals in Chinese Lave been posted all through the Colony.. BAND CONCERTY.
In view of the entire inck of open-air bard concerts on an organised seal in the Colony at present it is doubly interesting to rend afweekly programmes rendered by a Regimental band in the Botanic Gardens. The concerts were given on Tuesdays, alternately in the afternoon and in the evcaings. When there was not brilliant moonlight the Gardens were specially illiminated, and it appears that these weakly concerta were extremely popular.
DISASTROUS PIRE.
On June the 19th disastrous fire broke out in Sayingpadu "by which oight houses were totally destroyed. From the account in the Chin Mast it appears that there were many exciting and risky deals per- formed by the large body of assistants engaged in the patting cat of the flames, these including the Fire Brigade, the Police and a body of bluejackete from three ships in the harbour.
UNION CHURCH.
по
of
There was a large attendance at a meet- jog teld on June 20th of members and scat. holders to consider the state and prospects of Union Church. From the scount of the gathering it seems that the pulpit bad boro vacant for 14 months and that the London Missionary Society had been in- formed of the rangnation of Mr Lamont a year and half previously. A telegrain Having been received to the effect pastor had yet been appointed a resolution Whe proposed that the London Missionary Society be asked to waive their power "ven upon such appointment or sover ite oonnection with Union Church which Some existed under the Trust Deed. discussion ensued in which gedel dis approbatio was expressed at the tardi neas shown by the Society at Home to Assist the congregation. An amendment war evontaally proposed and agreed to acknowledging the Scainty's survices in the past and asking either that a pastor be appointed or a severance of the hociety' connection be effected. It was further stated that a movement was on foot to take stans to affliate the Church with the English Presbyterian Mission but discus- aion on that puiot was reserved pending the reply from Indon. The Rev J. C. Edge and Dr Chalmers were tendered thanks for their past assistance, and the latter promised to hold one service a week until the decision of the directors of the London Missionary Society had boce re- ceived.
RIPLE SHOOTING.
On the 21st of June members of the Hongkong Rifle Shooting Club competed st the "Kowloon" range for a silver cup, which, he eventually won by Sergt. Barnes of the 27th. Regt, ha sented four bull's eyes at each range as well as threa centres at each distance. The cup was afterwards presented by Inspector Caine ron, the President of the Club
