AN TEPPI LENT OFTHCIALS

A cartain villager from the Shun Tak district took his son named Ak Ku to indl employment in the village of Kongkun. The father returned he while the son remained at work. Some time later n military officer came with an informer so arrest a desperado in the village. Not inding the colprit they consoled them- les by seizing the unfortunate Ah Ku Fe course protested his innocence of any crime but was not believed. He was then tortured horribly to extort confession' and in the agony he was caffering be confessed i himself to g the author of many criman -all of which of course were actitious and only invented to put a stop to the torture.

Sever kind-hearted persons endeavoured

to bail him but to no purpose.

FREE TRADE FOR PHILIP. PINES.

Resentment' in England.

The Morning Post and the London Drily Mail announce the the Washington Go- vernment intends to close the Philippine market to other pations by establishing | free trade between the Philippines and the United States.

If arch a policy, is carried into effect it will mean the utter ruin of an extensive and growing British trade.

There is special resentment in Great Britain at the proposal, hacune the United Staten gave specifie assurances in. 1899 tat no changes would be made injurious to the old-established British commerce with the Philippines.

An export duty was recently imposed on Philippine hemp.; But a full rebato was allowed on all hemp sent to America. Till then London was the contro of the hemp trade.
