SMART SENTENCE FOR ASSAULT.

Thomas Dakay, a gummer of the 83rd Co., R. G. A., was charged, at the Magistracy, to-day, with hahaving la a noisy and dis orderly manner and with assaulting an Indian policeman and doing damage to the policeman's uniform to the extent of $12. The evidence was to the effect that defeu- dant was dronk and broke a door in Tai Wa Street and when the policeman came upon the scene defendant used his belt to him. A ine of $5 or 14 days' was imposed on the first charge while defendant was ordered to pay fifty cents compensation or 4 days' for breaking the door: 812 compen- astion for damaging the officer's uniform and one month without the option of a fine for the assault. The case was heard by Mr J. H. Kemp.

"Sir,The bearer who has been suffer- ing from rheumatism for the last six months is slightly better at present and is just aut of hospital. The bearer man is in great distress sed in a very poor condition in this city. He is willing to work if he gets the chavors as to make up a passage and exprases to return back home. Hoping that you or your kind gentlonicas will take pity upon this poor man as to do him the favour of saving his life from distress and suffer- ing, or to subscribe some money-as-a- charity for him to make up a passage and expenses to return home and not ta let him suffer in distress. For which your korrant will for ever pray. Yours truly, P.
